The Home's History
This home has had only 5 owners. The house was built in 1920 as a weekend home for banker Edward Gregory of National City Bank of New York. The architects of the house were Hollingsworth and Bragdon. The record of the contract being awarded to the architects for a grand sum of $50,000 (inflation adjusted this is $4.8MM today) is in the publication 'American Contractor’ April 1920 edition. The directives were to build a 2.5 story brick house and garage at the corner of Montrose and Berkeley avenue (previously the site of the prestigious South Orange Lawn Tennis club). The house was featured in many architecture digests of the time - including for the slate roof.
The builder of the home was James Henry L'Hommedieu who built some of the most costly and elegant residences in the country. He was a partner of Mr. A. T. Stewart (owner of the famous AT Stewart store in NYC) and is famous for having built every building in Garden City NY.
In 1943 by Joseph Louis Bonanno, a top mafia man from NYC and head of the Lionel Corporation (you may have heard of a movie called The Godfather based on the Lionel Corporation!) The home went by the address 510 Berkeley Ave at the time)
In the 1994 the house was sold to the Engelstein family who lived here for many years before moving to Long Island in 2001.
The house was then bought by the Robinsons who lived here until Mr. Robinson became a hedge fund owner in China in 2013.
The current owners are the fifth owners of the home and have lovingly maintained it.
This home truly merges old world charm with the finest of renovations and finishes, while retaining all of its true historical details throughout.
